Metric Builder Wizard
The metric builder wizard is the easiest way to create a metric. Instead of filling in a form, you open your own website with a small guided panel on top of it. To track a button, you click the button. To track a page, you confirm the page. The wizard handles the rest and saves a metric that works exactly like one created any other way.
The wizard creates click metrics and pageview metrics. Custom events need a small piece of code on your site, so they are created with the advanced form instead. See Custom Events.
Before you start
The wizard runs on your own website, so the A vs B tracking snippet must be installed on the page you want to open. The dashboard checks this for you before opening anything. If the snippet is missing, you will see install guidance instead of a broken page. See Snippet Installation if you have not set it up yet.
Open the wizard
Go to the Metrics page
From your project dashboard, click Metrics in the left navigation.
Click Build on my site
Next to the New metric button you will find Build on my site. Click it.
Enter the page to open
Type the address of the page where the thing you want to track lives: your pricing page, your checkout, your homepage. Once A vs B confirms the snippet is running there, click Open my page. It opens in a new tab with the wizard panel floating on top.
Choose what to count
The panel asks one question: what do you want to count? Pick Clicks on something or People reaching this page.
- Type the address of the page you want to open.
- Once the snippet check passes, click Open my page to launch the wizard on that page.
Create a click metric
Click the element you want to track
Move your mouse over the page. Elements light up as you hover. Click the button, link, or other element you want to measure. We identify the element for you; you never have to describe it in code.
Choose how many to count
If the page has other elements like the one you clicked, the wizard offers a choice: Just this element, or All 12 like this (with the real count from your page). Pick "all" when you care about a whole family of buttons, such as every Add to Cart button in a product grid.
Decide where clicks count
Choose Count clicks anywhere to track this element on every page it appears on, or Only on this page to count clicks on the current page alone.
Name it and save
The wizard suggests a name based on the element's text. Keep it or type your own, then click Save. The metric is ready to attach to experiments immediately.
Create a pageview metric
Confirm the page
Choose People reaching this page. The wizard first confirms the A vs B snippet is running on this page, so you know tracking can work here before you save anything.
Choose how broadly to count
Pick, in plain English, which visits should count: just this page, this page ignoring tracking tags, any address containing certain text, and so on. Each option is tested against the page you are on and labelled Matches this page or Does not match this page, so you can see the effect of each choice before you commit.
Name it and save
The wizard suggests a name from the page title. Adjust it if you like, then click Save.
The default option is right for most people: it counts the page whatever tracking tags happen to be on the link. The full list of match modes, with examples, is in Pageview Metrics.
Nothing in the wizard costs anything extra. Picking elements, choosing where clicks count, and saving metrics all work the same for everyone.
When to use the advanced form instead
The classic New metric form on the Metrics page covers everything the wizard does and more. Reach for it when:
- You want a custom event metric. These need a line of code on your site, so they live in the advanced form only. See Custom Events.
- You want an org-wide metric shared across every project. Wizard-created metrics belong to the current project.
- The element you want sits inside a sealed-off part of the page (some modern sites build sections this way, called shadow DOM). No point-and-click tool can reach inside these. The wizard tells you when this happens and the advanced form still works.
The two paths create exactly the same kind of metric. A metric built with the wizard can be edited later in the advanced form, and both behave identically in experiments and results.
After saving
Click Back to dashboard in the wizard's success screen, or simply switch back to your dashboard tab. Your new metric appears in the metrics list, ready to attach to any experiment as a primary or secondary metric. See Managing Metrics for editing and reuse.
